Supermarket chain Sheng Siong is set to open its first outlet in the Orchard Road area by the end of August.
The 6,500 sq ft outlet will be located at basement 1 of The Cathay mall in Dhoby Ghaut.
Closed for major renovations in August 2023, The Cathay recently reopened in March.
Sheng Siong, which has gained a reputation as a popular heartland supermarket chain, operates in 82 locations across Singapore.
From heartland to downtown
A Sheng Siong spokesperson told Shin Min Daily News that they had previously operated an outlet at the former Tekka Mall, which is now Tekka Place.
After the outlet ceased operations, many customers had expressed hopes for Sheng Siong to make a comeback in the downtown area.
"This time, we are opening at The Cathay as there is a vacant shop space available at a reasonable rental price," said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson explained that as The Cathay is surrounded by residential developments, there is an opportunity for Sheng Siong to serve the daily grocery needs of nearby residents.
The outlet is slated to open in August.
A mall spokesperson told Shin Min that the Sheng Siong supermarket will occupy a space of 6,500 sq ft at The Cathay.
Currently, the nearest supermarket in the area is a CS Fresh outlet at Plaza Singapura.
