M'sia state threatens to jail Muslim men for up to 2 years for skipping Friday prayers without valid reason
Fine.
Muslim men in the Malaysian state of Terengganu who miss their Friday prayers without a valid reason could face two years in jail and a fine of RM3,000 (S$910).
According to The Star, Terengganu official Muhammad Khalil said the punishments would only be imposed as a "last resort" if reminders were ignored.
However while previous enforcement actions were taken only against those who missed Friday prayers "three times consecutively", the new amendment means action can be taken if the person misses prayers even once.
Pointing to reminder banners in mosques as a clear warning about Friday prayer obligations, Khalil also told local media:
"Muslims should view the enforcement of this law as an effort to educate and uphold the dignity of religion, especially in fostering awareness among the younger generation".
