The doctor's husband thought the gun was fake and tussled with the robber.
A gun went off in Johor Bahru, Malaysia on Jul. 19 evening after a lone robber botched his attempt to rob a clinic and he fell while escaping empty-handed.
The gunshot that rang out in the neighbourhood alarmed people in the vicinity.
Took place in the evening
According to Malaysia media, the incident took place on Saturday at about 7pm at Taman Megah Ria, Seri Alam, which is in the Pasir Gudang area.
Chinese language media Guang Ming Daily reported that the robber appeared lean and could be Chinese.
Female doctor ran to get help
The female doctor in the clinic that was robbed ran to the shop next door to seek help.
When people in the shop next to the clinic were leaving the premises to find out what happened, they heard a gunshot ring out.
As the shop next to the clinic was equipped with surveillance cameras, footage was retrieved.
Robber fell while escaping
It showed the robber scrambling to escape and fumbling in the process as he appeared to fall to the ground.
An object was seen in his hand.
The running commentary in the video said a round was fired when the robber fell.
In the background, a cat could be seen dashing across the road, presumably in response to the gunshot noise.
The robber then appeared to keep the weapon in his pants.
He then lifted his motorcycle off the ground to escape.
Female doctor's husband fought with robber
According to the doctor, the robber allegedly went into the clinic and pulled out his gun and said he "needed help".
It was understood to mean that he needed money.
Malaysia police confirmed the incident saying the suspect ordered the victim to hand over cash and he fired one shot outside the premises before fleeing on a motorcycle.
The doctor's husband at the scene reportedly tussled with the robber as he assumed the gun that was displayed was fake.
The robber apparently did not use his firearm, but made a run for it.
The doctor's husband sustained minor injuries in the tussle.
Gunshot was loud
The person in the shop beside the clinic said the sound of the gun being discharged was very loud, which brought other merchants to the street.
He said they all expressed shock that guns could be obtained in Malaysia.
Could face death penalty
The Malaysia police added that the case is being investigated under the Firearms (Heavier Penalties) Act 1971.
Armed robbery is punishable by death or life imprisonment and whipping in Malaysia.
