While on a Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight from Copenhagen to Singapore, a man was served a fruit platter — only to discover that some of the fruit was mouldy.

He'd finished half the plate when he noticed.

The man, R, told Mothership that he and at least three other passengers were served mouldy blackberries during the Jul. 11 flight.

He was flying business class at the time.

Offered compensation

R informed the cabin crew of the situation, but was told that the food was catered from Copenhagen, and therefore, out of their control.

The crew also offered him and the affected passengers a S$75 voucher as compensation.

R said he turned down the offer.

"This is a food safety issue and not something that a voucher remediates," he said.

He has since filed a complaint with SIA and intends to report the matter to the Singapore Food Agency.

SIA also sent him the S$75 voucher via email, despite him having earlier rejected the offer, he said.

SIA apologises

In response to Mothership's queries, an SIA spokesperson confirmed the incident.

The cabin crew removed the fruit platter, offered a replacement, and inspected all remaining fruit platters once they were alerted of the situation, the spokesperson said.

SIA has since engaged with the catering provider to review their processes and implement additional measures to prevent future incidents.

"We sincerely apologise to the customer for this experience," the spokesperson added.
