The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) confirmed that the buildings near the sinkhole that appeared at the junction of Tanjong Katong Road and Mountbatten Road are not affected.

In a statement on Jul. 26, BCA said it was alerted to the sinkhole incident, which was adjacent to an existing PUB worksite, and its engineers carried out preliminary checks on the nearby One Amber condominium and the landed houses across the road.

Stabilisation works have also commenced as a precautionary measure and to ensure the safety of surrounding buildings and the worksite.

"BCA, LTA and PUB are closely monitoring the ongoing repair works and overall safety of the area," said a BCA spokesperson.

Draining of the sinkhole

Speaking to the media on Jul. 26 night, Herman Ching, director of the PUB's water reclamation network, said the sinkhole is approximately 3m deep.

He added that arrangements have been made to check that there are no other sinkholes and recovery work will begin, which involves draining the sinkhole, removing the vehicle, and filling in the sinkhole once the area is determined to be stable.

Ching also shared that the driver of the car that fell into the sinkhole can walk, but has shoulder pain and is undergoing check-ups at the hospital.

While there is no significant disruption to the water supply in the area, Ching said some households could experience low water pressure, and PUB is making alternative arrangements to back up the water supply.

Gaping sinkhole

A gaping sinkhole opened up on Tanjong Katong Road South on Saturday evening, leading to multiple lanes being cordoned off.

At 7:55pm, PUB, Singapore's national water agency, said the sinkhole occurred at approximately 5pm at the junction of Tanjong Katong Road and Mountbatten Road, affecting two lanes of the road.

The incident took place adjacent to an existing PUB worksite.

One vehicle fell into the sinkhole.

SCDF rescued the female driver, and conveyed her conscious to Raffles Hospital, PUB said.

Members of Parliament (MP) Gho Sze Kee and Goh Pei Ming spoke to the media on the same day, assuring Singaporeans that the area is stable and safe.

The authorities have begun performing scans in the area and will ensure it is secure before draining the water from the sinkhole.

They assured that "the area is stable".

In addition, in the event that there are water disruptions, the authorities will also step in.

As of the time of writing, an approximate timeline of repairs has not been confirmed.

While work is expected to go on overnight, they do not want to put pressures on the agencies involved as they hope that this issue will be approached "safely and systematically".

They also shared that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently putting together an advisory on how traffic will be diverted while works are ongoing.

The MPs also shared that the female driver, whose car fell into the sinkhole, was conveyed conscious to the hospital.
