A total of 11 BreadTalk stores in Chengdu, China closed down recently.

The closures in southwestern China sparked chatter online in early July.

Sichuan Daily reported that consumers were facing difficulties in recovering their stored-value cards and obtaining refunds.

BreadTalk response

In response, BreadTalk Shanghai Co Ltd, which oversees BreadTalk's business in China, posted a statement on its WeChat page addressing the consumer feedback.

The statement in Chinese coheres with the statement that BreadTalk in Singapore issued to Mothership in response to media queries.

What statement said

BreadTalk Singapore told Mothership that the Chengdu stores operated under a franchise arrangement.

Despite the closures, BreadTalk has maintained its retail presence over the years.

"BreadTalk has been operating in China for 22 years with more than 400 stores worldwide, and nearly 200 in China alone," the BreadTalk statement said in Chinese.

BreadTalk China said Chengdu BreadTalk is one of its franchisees in the Sichuan province.

"Customers received advance notice of the planned wind-down of operations, which was scheduled due to the franchise agreement's expiry in June 2025," BreadTalk Singapore added in its statement.

Addressing stored-value cards refund issue

The statement in Chinese added: "The planned changes have affected users in Sichuan who currently hold unused stored value cards."

"Our company deeply apologises and will do its utmost to urge the franchisee to assist you in processing the refund of stored-value cards," it added.

The statement from the Singapore headquarters added: "Our team in China is actively supporting customers who require assistance with their issued cards, to ensure a smooth transition."

Will still expand in China

BreadTalk will still continue to expand in China, the brand assured.

The Singapore statement added: "BreadTalk remains committed to growth in the Chinese market. We recently launched new store concepts in Shanghai to positive customer response and continue to focus on expanding our presence in China alongside our valued customers and partners."

The statement in Chinese said BreadTalk will continue enlarging its business territories by opening joint ventures and new concept stores, amongst other ways of expansion.

Will take action against misinformation

BreadTalk China also added that it reserves the right to take legal action against those who spread misinformation.

It said in Chinese: "With regard to false information posted online, our company reserves the right to hold them accountable through legal means to better safeguard our brand image, rights, and interests."
