A 17-year-old male teenager will be charged in court on Jul. 3 after he allegedly trespassed onto MRT tracks along Upper Changi Road East, between Simei and Tanah Merah stations.

He will be charged with one count of wilfully endangering the safety of persons travelling along the railway and another count of criminal trespass, according to a Jul. 2 news release issued by the Singapore Police Force.

The offence of wilfully endangering safety carries an imprisonment term of up to five years, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both.

The offence of criminal trespass carries an imprisonment term of up to three months, a fine of up to S$1,500, or both.

Allegedly took video on MRT tracks

The boy's alleged offences came to light after a video apparently shot from MRT tracks began circulating on Instagram on Jun. 10.

In the footage, a train carrying passengers could be seen coming from the opposite direction of the videographer.

At the time, the president of SMRT Trains, Lam Sheau Kai, told Mothership that the video was filmed at a location where construction works for new viaducts connecting to the future East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID) were ongoing.

Highlighting that track trespassing poses severe safety risks, Lam said SMRT had reported the incident to the police and is cooperating with their investigations.

Arrested on Jul. 1

In its news release, the police said they received a report that an individual had trespassed onto the MRT tracks on Jun. 10.

Through ground enquiries and follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the teenager's identity and arrested him on Jul. 1.

After the police identified the teenager's alleged point of entry, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) took immediate action to enhance security measures at the location to prevent similar incidents from reoccurring.

The police also emphasised that they take a serious view against acts that endanger public safety and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
