"We can assume they have been washed away during the floods, but the numbers are too many," Syaiful said, as quoted by The Star.

"I honestly don't understand how a fridge ends up in the river," he added, as quoted by Malay Mail.

Syaiful encouraged members of the public to be more civic-minded about taking care of the rivers and to change their mentality about throwing trash into the rivers.

94,000 tonnes of waste removed to date

The flood mitigation project under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) aims to increase the river capacity by up to 40 per cent, as well as rehabilitating the ecosystem and improving water quality, Malay Mail reported.

According to the New Straits Timesthe project has successfully increased the Klang River's water capacity by 18 per cent.

To date, about 94,000 tonnes of waste have been removed from the river, with an estimated handling cost of RM20 million.
