Officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were conducting an operation in the vicinity of Bendemeer Road in the late evening of Jun. 10 when they approached a 30-year-old male foreign national riding an e-bike.

Upon seeing the officers, however, the man abandoned his e-bike and fled the scene, according to a Jun. 14 news release issued by CNB.

While being pursued by the officers, the man was seen discarding a bag into the Kallang River.

After retrieving the bag from the river, officers found the bag to contain around 2,004g of cannabis and 518g of methamphetamine, commonly known as "Ice".

The amount of cannabis and "Ice" seized is estimated to be worth S$110,200 and could feed the addiction of about 580 drug abusers for a week, said CNB.

Man arrested on Jun. 12

Following the pursuit, CNB established the man's identity and carried out a follow-up operation on Jun. 12 afternoon, said the bureau.

The man was subsequently arrested for suspected drug trafficking offences at the entrance of a condominium in the vicinity of Kampong Eunos.

He was escorted to his residential unit in the condominium, within which various drug paraphernalia were seized.

Investigations into the drug activities of the accused are ongoing.

An offence to traffic drugs into Singapore

CNB emphasised in the news release that it is an offence for a person to traffic in a controlled drug, offer to traffic in a controlled drug, or to do or offer to do any act preparatory to or for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled drug.

It does not matter whether the person does any of the above on his or her own behalf, or on behalf of any other person in or outside of Singapore.

Those convicted of trafficking more than 250g of methamphetamine or 500g of cannabis may face the mandatory death penalty, added CNB.
