Tasmania, Australia’s southernmost island is known for its natural beauty, eco-tourism and inaccurately-depicted cartoon “devils”.

It’s also where last year, Tourism Tasmania invited Australians from all over the country to experience odd jobs in the downest of unders.

This time, they’ve partnered with Trip.com to give one Singapore resident the opportunity to experience what life is like in Tasmania during the winter months.

It is the first time that the “Winternship” opportunity is being offered to people beyond Australia, and Singapore is the only country to be a part of this.

Here’s what you could look forward to on this six-night Winternship experience.

Winter winning

Whilst us Singaporeans have evolved to combat our singular sweaty season with Jisulife fans and 7-Eleven window shopping, Tasmanians embrace the arrival of the chilly months in their own unique ways.

As the chosen “Wintern” from Singapore, you’ll get busy on a farm, keep a sauna boat warm, and learn the craft of winemaking and oyster farming in Tasmania.

All this, set against the backdrop of incredible nature and the warmth of Tasmanians.

Guided by these seasoned winter experts, you’ll essentially get a masterclass in wintering well.

Curringa Farm is a 750-acre working farm and the first stop on your Winternship.

This is the perfect opportunity to hit your screentime goals, as no amount of scrolling will help you with wrangling sheep and hand-feeding herds.

With the assistance of some hard-working (and more importantly, adorable) farm dogs, you’ll learn what it truly means to get your hands dirty.

At Kuuma Nature Sauna, hot and cold come together for an invigorating experience that no broken water heater can replicate.

Located in the stunning North West Bay, where you’ll find Tassies regularly diving in for the thrill of a winter swim, Kuuma Nature Sauna is the first sauna boat experience in Australia.

Your job? To help guide this sauna boat across the bay, and keep it hot enough to make the cold dip in the North West Bay worth it.

Now, tell me which SkillsFuture course will let you do that?

Like their human counterparts, Tasmanian wines don't just survive in winter — they thrive in it.

Your Winternship will conclude with an insight into winemaking on Tasmania’s largest vineyard. Here, you’ll learn about the history and process of this treasured produce.

Then, head down to the nearby Moulting Lagoon to find some oysters, where you can shuck the freshest form of this aquatic delicacy for yourself.

A delicious way to end a week of Winternship.

Your six nights in Tasmania will also include experiences along the lines of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, Wineglass Bay, Cataract Gorge Reserve and Tasmanian Seafood Seduction, which have all been given the Trip.Best seal of approval.

But what fun is it if there’s no one to share in the joy with you?

That’s why Tourism Tasmania is letting the lucky Wintern bring one more person along for the ride.

How can I be the lucky Wintern?

Hoping to escape from Singapore’s unrelenting humidity and spend a week gigging and chilling in Tasmania with your favourite human?

All you have to do is share why you want to be the first-ever Wintern from Singapore here, using 50 words or less.

Tourism Tasmania will be accepting entries from May 27, 7am till June 17, 9:59pm.

To enter, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be a resident of Singapore, aged 18 years or older at the time of entry.
  • You must be available to travel to Tasmania for six nights between August 1 to 31, 2025.
  • A valid passport with at least six months' validity from the date of departure is required.
  • You must be able to secure a travel visa to Australia and arrange appropriate travel insurance.

You don’t have to just rely on luck to experience all that Tasmania has to offer.

You can also check out Trip.com’s Best Things to Do list and book a holiday for yourself.

This branded article by Tourism Tasmania has got this writer wondering if he’s too old for an internship.
