Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) secretary-general Chee Soon Juan thanked voters for their enthusiastic support and said he wished the party had better results for them.

Taking the stage near 1am on May 4, Chee said, "It's been a very disappointing set of results across the board, as far as SDP is concerned."

The secretary-general commented that his "jaw just dropped" when he saw the results for four constituencies the party contested.

SDP contested in Sembawang West SMC, Bukit Panjang SMC, Sembawang GRC, and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC in this general election, taking 46.81 per cent, 38.59 per cent, 29.93 per cent, and 26.54 per cent of the votes respectively.

He said the party will be analysing the results in the coming weeks and months to "get to the bottom of it and see how things turned out the way they have".

Chee told voters, "If there is any consolation, it's that we ran the best campaign that we could and with your support, I just think we managed to soar, as I said, in terms of where we want to get to. But you know me, right? We press on. That's all I can say."

Final results revealed Chee to have gotten 46.81 per cent of the votes, with 10,541 out of 22,788 voters voting for the SDP secretary-general.

A total of 22,519 votes were valid and 269 votes were rejected.

Chee missed out on NCMP seat

Chee had said he will be requesting a recount of votes for Sembawang West SMC, reported 8world News.

He narrowly missed out on a non-constituency member of parliament (NCMP) seat, which will both go to Workers' Party Jalan Kayu SMC's Andre Low and a candidate from Tampines GRC.
