Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) secretary-general Chee Soon Juan will request a recount of votes for Sembawang West SMC, reported 8world News.
SDP chairman Paul Tambyah made the announcement on Chee's behalf at the Ministry of Education (Evans) Stadium on May 3.
Chee, who is SDP's candidate for Sembawang West SMC, got 47 per cent of votes cast, according to a sample count released by Elections Department Singapore (ELD).
The People's Action Party's candidate, Poh Li San, got 53 per cent of the votes cast in the sample count.
Tambyah added that if Chee were to become a non-constituency member of parliament (NCMP), it would be the first time in 28 years that an SDP member entered parliament.
Based on sample counts, Chee stands a chance to become an NCMP as he is currently amongst the opposition politicians with the highest losing vote percentage.
