A 51-year-old man has been arrested after a fire broke out at Block 20 Jalan Tenteram on May 29 morning.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook update that preliminary findings indicated that the fire was "intentionally started".

Police confirmed with Mothership that the man was arrested for the offence of mischief by fire.

The police said it received a call for assistance at about 11:40am that day.

SCDF conveyed five persons, aged between 12 and 74, to the hospital for smoke inhalation, including the 51-year-old man.

The police added that investigations are ongoing.

40 people evacuated

SCDF said that upon their arrival, the fire involved items placed along the corridor outside a unit on the second floor and third floor.

The fire had also affected the inside of both these units.

About 40 persons from the affected block were evacuated by the police and SCDF as a precautionary measure.

The fire was extinguished by SCDF using two water jets.

A few neighbouring units also sustained heat and soot damage.

A video posted online showed thick, black smoke billowing from the affected unit as flames raged inside.

SCDF officers were seen working in the rain as they ran toward the scene and worked to contain the fire.

Guidelines on use of common area

Members of the public are advised to help maintain a safe living environment by keeping common corridors, lift lobbies, and staircases free of clutter, SCDF said.

"A cluttered corridor can increase the risk of fire spread, hinder evacuation efforts, and delay SCDF’s response during an emergency," they added.

You can refer to the guidelines on the use of common areas of residential estates and private residential developments for more information.
