The 33-year-old Singaporean woman, who was found dead with her husband in a guesthouse in Malaysia, reportedly witnessed her 43-year-old husband allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl.
Xie Jie and Zhuang Shuyi (transliteration) knew the girl and allegedly brought her out on the pretense of going for a walk on Apr. 30, but instead took her to a rented unit in Selangor where she was suspected to have been assaulted, according to Shin Min Daily News and China Press.
Serdang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Farid Ahmad told Shin Min that the girl later told her parents that the couple had done "bad things" to her.
Her parents immediately alerted the police, and the couple was arrested and were being investigated.
Xie was scheduled to appear in court on May 14, but failed to show up.
The couple was found dead at a guesthouse in Kuala Lumpur two days later on May 16, with Malaysia authorities ruling their deaths as suicide.
Xie was also wanted for numerous crimes in Selangor, including soliciting prostitution and possession of obscene materials.
Found dead in a guesthouse by staff members
KL police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa said the couple had sealed the doors and windows, and were also believed to have used a grill and charcoal to take their own lives.
He added that their families have been notified, and the case is still under investigation.
The statement follows the discovery of their bodies under suspicious circumstances on May 16.
The couple was found dead in a guesthouse located on Jalan Nadchatiram, Cheras, by a staff member who noticed that their shoes were still outside after their supposed checkout time.
After receiving no response despite repeated knocks, the staff entered the room with the manager's permission.
The couple was found on the bed with the air conditioner, fan, and television still running.
Apart from remnants of burnt charcoal, police also found ketamine on a plate.
The bodies were found in a state of decompostion.
Authorities urged individuals facing mental health challenges to seek help.
