"If we take care of the residents, the residents will take care of the results," Minister Chan Chun Sing said at a media doorstop at Holland Drive Market & Food Centre on May 4 after the People's Action Party (PAP) landslide win in Tanjong Pagar GRC.

The PAP team won 81.03 per cent of the vote share, nearly 20 percentage points higher than in the 2020 general election.

The ruling party attained an overall 65.57 per cent of the popular vote in the 2025 General Election, an increase from 61.23 per cent in the 2020 election.

Main focus on residents

When asked about his thoughts on the results, Chan said that results come secondary to the residents.

"So as I've mentioned previously, this is not a strategy of about 10 days of what we do, actually. It is a strategy of doing our work conscientiously every day, and that's what we have done," he said.

"Our main focus is always on the residents and let the results take care of itself. And it's not the other way, right? Not to focus on the results and then try and think of doing different things to try and achieve that result."

On why they did not have a rally, Chan said they wanted to focus their efforts on the ground.

He said all seven of his team members, including those from neighbouring Queenstown and Radin Mas SMCs spent their time engaging the residents at a "personal level".

"And if there are things that we need to respond to because some other people have said something, we will do so via the various podcast interviews or various other media interviews."

In Queenstown SMC, PAP Eric Chua secured 81.12 per cent of the vote share while PAP Melvin Yong attained 69.17 per cent of the votes in Radin Mas SMC.

Will continue to engage residents

Moving forward, Chan said they will still essentially be using the "same basic strategy" — to focus on residents.

"And again, if we take care of our residents, well, in the next five years, I'm quite sure the residents will take care of the results," he said.

Chan also noted that all seven of them are back to engaging with residents at markets as early as 8am today.

"Because it's only by constantly walking the ground, listening to the residents, understanding their needs, understanding what is topmost on their mind, that we can continue to take care of them. "
