As heavy rains hit Singapore on the afternoon of Apr. 13, a coffee shop in Yishun was flooded with ankle-high water.

This prompted a staff to try sweeping away the rainwater with a broom — which turned out to be an exercise in futility.

Flooded

Videos of the inundated coffee shop at Block 645 Yishun Street 61 were put up on Facebook at around 2pm.

Patrons were seen eating as murky-brown water flowed through the coffee shop, carrying with it leaves and debris.

A walkway next to the coffee shop was also flooded.

A woman in an orange shirt then used a broom to try and sweep away the water.

"It's no use," she remarked in Mandarin.

Not the first time

A drinks stall employee at the coffee shop, surnamed Huang (transliteration) told Shin Min Daily News that the coffeeshop is situated on a slope, so it gets affected by rainwater from the surrounding areas.

"During heavy rain, the drainage system is not able to cope with that, so we would experience ponding," Huang said.

Huang added that the coffee shop had experienced severe ponding about two or three times in the past few years.

Staff at other stalls told Shin Min that some diners left the coffee shop on Apr. 13 after it was inundated with rainwater, which affected their business.

A staff at a neighbouring bakery told Shin Min that water from the walkway nearly reached the level of the lower shelves.

But thankfully, the water did not flow into the bakery itself, she added.
