A woman was taking the escalator with her young daughter at Pioneer MRT station on Apr. 18 evening when a man allegedly groped her from behind.

In response, she immediately grabbed hold of the man and asked those around her to help her alert the police.

After police officers arrived at the scene, they placed the man, 26, under arrest.

Aftermath caught on camera

Speaking to Mothership, the woman, who wishes to be known as Judy Liu, said the incident happened at around 5:50pm on Friday.

Liu also documented the aftermath of the incident on camera and uploaded the footage to Xiaohongshu on Apr. 18.

She had initially planned on taking the MRT to head out to dinner with her daughter, but their plan was disrupted after the accused allegedly touched her bottom on the escalator heading up.

In the comments section, Liu told another Xiaohongshu user that the accused had apparently tried to flee through the gantry afterwards, but she managed to catch up and pulled him back.

Later on, a male MRT employee could be seen at the scene watching over the accused as Liu alerted the police.

Police officers launched investigations

After police officers arrived at the scene, they led Liu to an MRT staff office.

In the comments section, Liu said a total of four police officers attended to her case.

The police officers had apparently told her that the issue was "very, very serious" as it made women feel unsafe.

They also told her that they would handle the case "sternly", recounted Liu.

Handed over dress as evidence

Later on, the video showed Liu exiting the MRT station in a different outfit.

According to her, she asked her family to send her another dress to wear, as she had handed over the dress she wore during the incident to the police for investigation.

She further claimed that the police had retrieved the CCTV camera footage.

Encouraged victims not to be afraid

At the end of the video, Liu offered words of encouragement for young people and women:

"If you ever encounter a similar situation, do not be afraid. Be confident and call for help. Those around you will help you notify the police. Make sure to be confident!"

In her video caption, Liu also added that this was the first time she had encountered such a situation during her 23 years in Singapore.

She decided to alert the police and confront the alleged perpetrator because she wanted to be a role model for her daughter and other female victims.

"Stand up for yourself confidently and punish the perpetrators!" she wrote.

Police statement

In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed they were alerted to a case of outrage of modesty at around 6pm on Apr. 18.

A 26-year-old man was arrested in relation to the case.

Police investigations are ongoing.
