In an Instagram post on Apr. 21, Maliki said that it is a "good time" for him to retire from politics.

"PM [Lawrence] Wong and I agreed that having served five terms since 2001, it is a good time for me to make way for a new candidate from politics."

Maliki thanked grassroots leaders, volunteers, and staff at the Constituency Office for their commitment.

He also expressed his gratitude to SM Lee Hsien Loong for the "honour of serving in various ministries".

Maliki said: "It has been a privilege working alongside PM Lee, PM Wong, and my Cabinet colleagues in navigating challenges and shaping Singapore’s continued success."

He said that it has been "especially meaningful" to work with the other Malay/Muslim MPs and community leaders to "uplift lives through various social programmes".

Maliki also thanked his family, wife Sadiah and children Lidia and Adli.

"Thank you for your unconditional love, personal sacrifices, daily prayers and for being my pillars of strength that have enabled me to perform my duties and responsibilities to the best of my abilities all these years.

I am excited and look forward to spending more time with you as I work on the next chapter of my career and our lives together."

Not contesting in East Coast

Earlier in April 2025, Maliki confirmed that he would not be standing for election in East Coast GRC and was spotted on walkabouts with PAP new face Hazlina Abdul Halim.

In his post, he said: "My immediate priority is to ensure a smooth transition and rally support for the East Coast GRC team in the coming GE. I am confident they will serve residents well."

Since 2001

Maliki was first elected to Parliament in 2001 and served Sembawang GRC from 2001.

He was elected as MP for East Coast GRC from 2011.

In his time as a politician, he has also been appointed as Mayor for South East District, and Minister of State for Defence, Foreign Affairs and National Development.

In 2020, Maliki became the Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
