One of the world's oldest-known meteor showers, with sightings that date back to 687 BC in China, is set to light up Singapore's skies.

The meteor shower will peak on the night of Apr. 22 and is best viewed in the early hours on Apr. 23 after 1am, according to Science Centre Singapore.

Observers can expect to see 10 to 20 meteors per hour during its peak, with exceptionally bright flashes that can be viewed with the naked eye.

About the Lyrids

The meteor shower occurs when the Earth crosses the trail of debris left by Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher.

It's an annual occurrence that typically peaks in late April.

This year, the Lyrids will be active from Apr. 17 to 26, but will peak from Apr. 22 to 23.

It's best viewed after 1am when the radiant point of the meteor shower — near the constellation Lyra, its namesake — is higher in the night sky.

How to view the shower

If you're interested in watching the shower, you can try seeking out darker locations like parks, beaches, reservoirs, or open spaces away from city lights.

Observers should also check the weather forecast as cloud cover can affect the visibility of the phenomenon.

No special equipment is required.
