Prime Minister Lawrence Wong was recently featured on The Daily Show, an American satirical news television programme.

The segment, "Trump’s Tariffs Ruined America’s Reputation. Does Anyone Still Respect Us?" on YouTube, has been viewed some 1.1 million times.

In the clip, The Daily Show host Desi Lydic looked at the impact of Trump's tariffs on U.S relations with the world.

Trade war

"During his campaign, [President] Donald Trump promised that America would be climbing the respect charts again," Lydic said as she introduced the segment, adding that there's nothing the world respects more than a "good old-fashioned trade war".

A few weeks into Trump's imposition of widespread tariffs, however, Lydic pointed out that countries, such as China, France, and Italy have lost respect towards the U.S.

Even Canada, which the show dubbed as a country known for its "friendly respect" and "politeness", has started boycotting U.S. products.

"You've even got Canadian morning shows being mean to us?" Lydic asked.

"It's easy to forget what real politicians sound like"

"Is there anyone in the world that still respects us?"

The show then cut to a clip of PM Wong's Apr. 8 speech in Parliament on the 10 per cent blanket tariffs the U.S. imposed on Singapore.

"These are not actions one does to a friend," PM Wong said.

PM Wong's speech had previously gone viral on various social media, with many commenters praising the prime minister for his response.

"It's easy to forget what real politicians sound like," one commenter wrote.

"We have reached never-before seen levels of respect"

"Trump promised we'd be respected like never before, and technically, we have reached never-before-seen levels of respect," Lydic said.

The host dubbed America's "respectedness" as a "stepmum who insists we call her mum but we're still gonna call her Joyce".

"Better luck next round, America."
