GE2025: Election deposit per candidate set at S$13,500
Candidates for GE2020 also paid an election deposit of the same amount.
The election deposit for General Election (GE) 2025 is set at S$13,500 per prospective candidate, according to a media release issued by the Elections Department Singapore (ELD) on Apr. 15.
The amount is derived from the fixed monthly allowance payable to an elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the month immediately before the date of dissolution of Parliament, rounded to the nearest S$500.
As Parliament has been dissolved on Apr. 15 and the fixed monthly allowance for MPs in March 2025 was S$13,750, the election deposit was rounded down to S$13,500.
Candidates for GE2020 also paid a deposit of the same amount.
To get their deposit back, prospective candidates for GE2025 will need to secure at least 12.5 per cent of the valid votes cast in the respective constituencies they are contesting.
In the last election, the Peoples Voice party, led by Lim Tean, had their deposits forfeited after they scored a vote share of 12.18 per cent at Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC)
Similarly, independent candidate Cheang Peng Wah also lost his deposit after he only scored 2.78 per cent of the votes cast in Pioneer Single-Member Constituency (SMC).
