A 18-year-old girl in China could not find an affordable place to rent in Hunan Province, so she resorted to paying 50 yuan (S$9.20) a month to stay in her company's showroom toilet.

The girl documents her living condition on her Douyin account, showcasing what it has been like sleeping in the showroom toilet for the past 29 days.

According to Xiao Xing Morning Herald, the girl, surnamed Yang, works as a salesperson at a furniture wholesale store.

"It's not about suffering. I just thought about what was convenient," she said to the Chinese media.

Daily life

In her videos, Yang can be seen doing her laundry, getting ready and doing chores in the toilet.

Her bed is a collapsible bedframe that she can fold up and store outside the toilet. She would even put up a cloth to separate the cubicles in the bathroom and her living space.

Can't find anything affordable

According to Xiao Xing Morning Herald, Yang has been working with the company since 2024 and was living in the lady boss's house.

When she decided to move out in 2025, Yang struggled to find housing as there was nothing affordable.

As such, she persuaded her boss to rent out the showroom's bathroom to her.

Yang insisted on paying rent and planned to pay 200 yuan ($38.90) a month, but the boss only charged her 50 yuan (S$9.20) a month for utilities.

She told Xiang Xiao Morning Herald that the bathroom does not smell as she cleans it thoroughly.

Currently, Yang is paid about 3,000 yuan (S$553) a month and spends only about 300 yuan (S$55.30) to 400 yuan (S$73.40).

The rest of her salary goes into saving for her future house and car.

"For me right now, having a place to stay is enough. I do not want to spend a lot of money renting a place. I'm only 18, and spending 800 yuan (S$147.50) on rent is too much for me," she added.

Some have suggested that she stay in the showroom itself, but Yang said it was "too spacious" and made her feel "uneasy".

When asked if Yang's living arrangement was a publicity stunt, the boss confirmed that Yang was staying in the bathroom and it was not a publicity stunt.
