The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Singapore public transport operators have teamed up to provide a sensory tool kit to help passengers with autism manage sensory overload while travelling on public transport.

In a Facebook post on Feb. 5, SBS Transit announced that the tool kits will be available on a trial basis at various bus interchanges and MRT stations:

  • Bedok Bus Interchange
  • Tampines Bus Interchange
  • Yio Chu Kang Bus Interchange
  • Hougang MRT Station
  • Buangkok MRT Station
  • Bedok Reservoir Station
  • Tampines Station (Downtown Line)

Each kit contains items to help calm individuals down, such as earmuffs, visual timers, interactive books, and fidget tools.

Passengers with autism, as well as their caregivers can approach the staff at the passenger service centre to borrow the kit or items at no charge.

SBS Transit acknowledged that for individuals with autism, there could be sensory challenges when taking public transport.

These come in the form of loud noises and crowded spaces, which could result in individuals becoming overwhelmingly anxious.

SBS Transit shared that its staff will be trained in autism awareness to help support passengers with autism.
