Amazon Web Services (AWS) has opened a second corporate office in Singapore to serve as its Asia Pacific Hub.

The new office at IOI Central Boulevard occupies over 360,000 square feet of workspace across eight floors, and can accommodate up to 3,000 employees.

It currently has 2,500 employees in Singapore.

Investment in Singapore

Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information, Janil Puthucheary, was present at the launch on Feb. 12, 2025.

He shared that the digital economy generated a value-add of S$113 billion in 2023, equivalent to 17.7 per cent of Singapore's nominal GDP.

AWS has invested over S$12 billion in Singapore since 2010.

It is set to invest over S$23 billion in Singapore by 2028, supporting an estimated equivalent of 12,300 full-time jobs in Singapore each year.

"With technologies like AI, the boundaries of our productivity can be pushed further, and the competitiveness of our industries can be strengthened," said Puthucheary, adding that enabling Singapore enterprises and workers to take advantage of AI is part of Singapore's Smart Nation strategy.

Investing in people

Puthucheary reiterated the government's drive to "invest in our people", in order to equip the workforce with the skills needed to thrive in a digital economy.

He cited IMDA's Tech Skills Accelerator, set up in 2016, which has placed over 17,000 people in high quality technology jobs, and further trained another 231,000 in skills in emerging areas like AI, cybersecurity and data analytics.

Puthucheary welcomed Amazon's setting up of an Innovation Hub, slated to open by Q3 of 2025, which will demonstrate the latest industry technologies, like Generative AI capabilities.

This will provide a collaborative space that will help grow the next generation of Singaporean tech leaders.

"Opportunities for learning and experimentation are being created, but it’s how to turn that alive and make sure that it flourishes. Ideas need to be exchanged, collaborations need to be creative, and then it comes alive.

I encourage AWS to continue working closely with our educational institutions and training providers in developing initiatives that equip Singaporeans with the skills needed for the future of work."

AWS will be growing its team in Singapore across key areas including software engineering, machine learning and AI, data science, specialist technologies, and data centre engineering, supporting both customers and partners in their digital transformation journeys.

Collaboration between private and public sectors

Puthucheary said the government is committed to working with stakeholders to cultivate a thriving digital ecosystem, and tech companies like AWS, with global reach and expertise, are valuable partners in supporting Singapore's digital transformation.

He pointed out that the government cannot "do everything", and industry-led initiatives are also important.

In partnership with various public and private sector entities, AWS launched AI Spring Singapore in 2024, which helped to spread the adoption of AI by these agencies.

"The opening of AWS’ Asia Pacific Hub is a significant milestone, not just for AWS, but for Singapore as well.

It represents the next stage of our ambition going forward. It underscores our shared vision of a future powered by technology and driven by innovation.

It is a testament to your commitment to Singapore and our region."
