A 28-year-old Taiwanese policewoman was killed after she was rear-ended by a 20-year-old female university student's scooter, falling and subsequently getting run over by a tour bus.

The student, surnamed Tai, has been publicly shamed after she was captured on eyewitness footage, checking on her bike after the fatal accident.

According to ETtoday, the incident occurred on the morning of Apr. 28 in Annan District, Tainan.

The police officer, Cheng Yung-hsin, was preparing for her wedding to her boyfriend before the tragic accident, The Standard reported.

According to The Standard, Tai did not slow down to stop and hit Cheng from behind.

Cheng lost her balance, fell into the adjacent lane and got crushed by an oncoming tour bus.

Tai got off her bike.

Instead of checking on Cheng, who was trapped under the bus, Tai immediately inspected her motorcycle for damage, as captured in viral footage.

Cheng died at the scene.

Hearts broken

According to Sinchew Daily, Cheng's mother could not hide her grief.

Cheng's mother said, "It was so heartbreaking to see her lying on the ground. It really hurts."

Cheng's future mother-in-law also broke down and said Tai's actions had harmed many families, and said that both mothers' hearts are broken.

Cheng's future mother-in-law also scolded Tai's family for not apologising, calling Tai's actions "terrible and too much".

University issues statement

Kunshan University of Science and Technology issued a public statement regarding the incident on Apr. 30.

The statement expressed the university's condolences for Cheng and said that the student involved had cooperated with the police to complete a statement at the scene.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the female police officer who tragically lost her life and her family, and we pray that she may rest in peace."

The university said that the case is under judicial investigation and out of respect for the rule of law, it would refrain from commenting on the details.

The university added that it is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities and has implemented measures in response to the incident.

This includes strengthening traffic safety and legal education, and launching a counselling service due to the surge of verbal attacks and doxxing targeted towards the faculty and its students.

"We urge all parties to remain calm and rational, to cease the infringement of personal data and verbal abuse directed at our faculty and students, to allow the judicial process to proceed fairly."
