Overworking and the impact of climate change on lower-income households were among the issues raised by speakers at a Labour Day rally held at Hong Lim Park on May 1, which was attended by a number of opposition politicians.

The event was jointly organised by activist groups Workers Make Possible and SG Climate Rally.

This year's rally, the first to be jointly organised by the two groups, centred on the theme, "Running out of time".

In a campaign paper, the organisers elaborated on the theme, noting that Singapore's workers have little time for rest, caregiving and leisure.

"Even if you can afford to take a break, there's so much anxiety around "falling behind", "losing out", or being judged, because we have been taught to tie our self-worth to work."

They also highlighted the high cost of living and rising global temperatures.

After a series of stage performances, several speakers took the microphone to speak on various issues, such as single parenthood and workers' rights.

A physical display advocating for the ban on using lorries to ferry workers was seen set up on a corner of the park's field.
