Haig Road Putu Piring has closed two of its outlets within four days.
An announcement on Apr. 27 said the Haji Lane Food Corner outlet had ceased operations the day before, while the Tristar Complex outlet closure was announced on Apr. 29.
The brand, which has been selling steamed rice cakes since 1985, gained international recognition after being featured on the first season of "Street Food: Asia" on Netflix in 2019.
Closure
On the Tristar Complex outlet's closure, the business said it was not an easy decision, but one it made after "carefully reviewing its overall performance".
"Despite all our efforts in marketing and promotions, the location came with its own set of challenges that made it difficult to sustain in the long run," it wrote on Instagram.
In response to Mothership's queries, the business said this location presented some challenges in terms of footfall, as well as the significantly highest operating costs compared to the other outlets.
As such, it had planned the closure for a few months.
Meanwhile, the Haji Lane Food Corner closure was "totally unplanned" and "unexpected".
The landlord sold her property and company to a foreign investor, it was revealed.
"Unfortunately, only a few days were given. Forcing Haig Road Putu Piring and the other tenant to pack and go within a very short time notice," the business said.
Hint at new outlets
Haig Road Putu Piring also hinted that it will open new outlets in other locations, and asked diners to suggest where it should open new branches.
Its three remaining branches are at Century Square in Tampines, Block 1 Geylang Serai Market and Block 14 Haig Road Hawker Centre.
The business also said it has no plans to close these three outlets.
It is also collaborating with another company to sell putu piring and to create putu bambu, a new menu item.
Additionally, it has recently secured a new outlet at East Village Mall in Simpang Bedok and will be making a return there soon, it told Mothership.
It had previously closed an outlet there in February 2026 after the tenancy agreement ended, but has since secured a new unit.
"At the same time, we are actively exploring other kiosk-format outlets as part of our expansion plans. We are also focusing on growing our live station catering services, which continue to see strong demand, especially during festive seasons and special occasions," it shared.
