S'porean stand-up comedian Rishi Budhrani to play his dad again in 'Can I Make You A Suit, Mate?'
Comedy, theatre, craftsmanship.
Singaporean stand-up comedian Rishi Budhrani, 41, was sacked from his father's tailoring business years ago.
Mostly because his father wanted him to study to be a lawyer, doctor, or engineer.
That experience has instead provided valuable material for the joker's semi-improvised comedy monologue, "Can I Make You A Suit, Mate?"
Budhrani will once again play his dad.
Tailor-made story
Taking place from May 20 to 24, 2026 at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre at Wild Rice, Funan, the show has been described as a “tailor-made Singaporean story” as it draws from the experience of Budhrani’s Singaporean tailor father.
The story Rishi tells is loosely based on Prakash Budhrani, a tailor known as "Jimmy" to his clients.
Audiences will be taken through his time in Singapore as a immigrant business owner for over four decades.
The show will feature Budhrani’s father's perspectives as he regales audiences with stories of dealing with the “Mat-salleh’s” from different parts of the world.
He also shares how he “fought to survive” through the Gulf War, Sars, the Asian Financial Crisis, and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Budhrani does this through his comedic set while trying to make an audience member a suit.
“Can I Make You A Suit, Mate?” was first presented by Esplanade, Theatres on the Bay as part of Kalaa Utsavam, Indian Festival of Arts 2022.
It was staged again in 2024.
