After struggling with hair loss for 10 years, I finally sought expert help

I didn’t realise my hair pores were so clogged.

I started noticing I was losing hair when I was 17.

It was hard not to pay attention when my family would jokingly point out my bald spots, never mind that they have the same problem too. (I love you guys, please don’t kill me.)

I felt embarrassed when my bald spots were especially obvious, like when I went swimming with friends, but still I left my hair alone — until the stress of university made it worse.

Since then I have been using minoxidil, a topical treatment for hair growth. Though I’ve seen some differences, I have been looking for more ways to supplement my hair journey. Not to mention the underlying worries I had about the potential side effects of depending on such a chemical in the long-term.

So when there was an opportunity to try the Tri-Action Scalp Revival Treatment at Beijing 101 Hair Consultants, I thought, why not?

Rediscovering my scalp

I thought my hair loss was tricky to address because it was hereditary, but turns out there are also external factors I can control, like my very oily and clogged scalp.

This was revealed during the pre-treatment scalp scan and analysis at Beijing 101’s Jem outlet.

It was jarring to see the roots of my hair magnified on a computer screen, dotted with white flakes and excess oil.

My scalp was so oily that my therapist Candy asked if I was instructed not to wash my hair beforehand, even though I did in fact wash it just before heading out.

Due to my clogged hair pores, each follicle unit produces only one to two strands of hair, whereas most people would have three.

It’s quite easy for my scalp to get oily in hot and sunny Singapore, Candy said. It also didn’t help that I bleached my hair.

After this eye-opening consultation, I was ready to see what Candy could do to tackle this problem.

Dirt, dirt, go away

My treatment began with a deep cleanse, known as a Hydro Scalp Reset, to allow my scalp to absorb nutrients better later.

Candy applied a suction device at various parts of my scalp, and it started sucking away the dirt and impurities on my head like a vacuum cleaner.

There was a comfortable pressure, and it felt like I was getting mini baths on my head.

As my hair pores started to open up, they were treated to a hair mask which Candy said was customised specifically for my oily scalp condition.

The minty mask was soothing against my skin, and I couldn’t help but close my eyes and take a rest over the next 15-20 minutes as it stayed on my head.

Getting expert advice

The cleansing continued with Candy washing my hair, during which she gave me helpful tips about how I should do it at home.

She suggested that I shampoo twice each time, make sure the water is warm (about 37 to 40°C), and use my fingertips to massage the shampoo in, whilst avoiding using my nails.

I never really gave this process much thought, and was surprised to learn there were a few steps I could take to wash my hair more thoroughly.

I took mental note of all this while Candy gave my scalp a wonderful acupressure massage.

So relaxing

Now that Candy worked hard to open up my hair pores, it was time for them to receive some treats.

And the nutrients did feel like treats, delivered through massages. I had gone into the session looking forward to some self-pampering, and I was not disappointed.

After Candy blow-dried my hair, she applied a customised ampoule for reducing scalp inflammation and congestion. She massaged it into my scalp first with a nutrient booster machine, then by hand.

Her firm hands worked methodically all around my head, and I felt deep relief.

This was Beijing 101’s signature meridian head massage, which also focused on acupressure points, extending to my neck and shoulders too.

Candy next took out a large device known as the follicle awakening spray that, like its name suggests, sprays the same ampoule as before onto my scalp, to ensure it truly penetrates in there.

The big reveal

After the session was over, my scalp already felt cleaner and more refreshed. I was excited to see if this difference showed when Candy scanned my scalp a second time and sure enough, there were a lot fewer white flakes, the follicles were much less clogged, and my scalp was visibly less shiny.

While I was impressed by the results, I understood that it was not a one-time cure-all. The staff emphasised this too, recommending that I continue with treatments once a week to get a cleaner scalp and thicker hair.

It was also helpful to learn that external treatment can help reduce hair loss even if some of the issues are internal, including hormones and genes.

I left the outlet feeling rejuvenated and ready to start the day. As Candy even styled my hair at the end, my colleagues gave me compliments on it once I stepped into the office.
