Justin Trudeau, 54, joins girlfriend Katy Perry, 41, in US for World Cup match even though Canada also playing

Justin Trudeau, the former prime minister of Canada, spent the opening day of the 2026 World Cup with his American girlfriend Katy Perry.

On Jun. 12 night, he watched the United States defeat Paraguay 4-1 in Inglewood, California.

Perry, a pop star, was part of the pre-match opening ceremony in Inglewood.

Earlier that day, Canada were held to a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.

Canadians voice out

Trudeau’s absence on home ground sparked social media discussion among Canadians.

They said he should have remained in Toronto as he was prime minister when Canada was named a co-host of the World Cup in North America,

In response, Trudeau posted on Jun. 14 on X: "Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup 🇨🇦."

Trudeau and Perry watched the match from a box after her performance.

They were seen kissing and holding hands.

Trudeau, 54, and Perry, 41, first dated in July 2025.

Katy Perry declares her love

A week before the World Cup, Trudeau and Perry were at the Tribeca Festival for the debut of her film, "Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour - Live From Paris".

During the onstage conversation with People, she called Trudeau “the love of my life”.

“I feel like a more grounded person in so many aspects of my life,” she said.

“I am very in love.”
