The undercarriage of a train emitted smoke at Sembawang MRT station on Apr. 13 evening.

Passengers were evacuated.

A video of the incident showed a smoke-filled train platform.

The doors of the train were open, as smoke from the undercarriage wafted through the platform gap.

Some commuters were seen covering their noses, while others were recording the incident on their phones.

A commuter onboard the affected train told Stomp that the train eventually departed from the station and “moved very slowly” and the next train moved at a slower speed.

SMRT's response

In response to a Mothership's queries, SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai said smoke was observed coming from the train’s undercarriage at the North-South Line station at about 8:10pm.

Preliminary checks indicated that the smoke may have been caused by a brake that remained engaged and could not be released.

Staff assisted all commuters on board to disembark safely as a precautionary measure, he added.

The train was subsequently withdrawn from service for further checks.

Lam said: “Train services continued to operate normally, and there were no reports of any commuters requiring medical assistance.”
