A 51-year-old man who was caught naked in a parked car with his lover was sentenced on Apr. 6, 2026, to six weeks' jail and a fine of S$1,000 after he drove off with his lover's husband still on the car's bonnet.
This caused the husband to be flung off the car and subsequently given 14 days of hospitalisation leave.
The accused, Chia Hiok Seah, was also disqualified from holding or obtaining all classes of driving licences for a period of a year from his release date, The Straits Times (ST) reported.
Chia had pleaded guilty to one count of appearing nude in a public place and was also convicted after a trial of one count of causing hurt to the husband of his lover, Wong Shunyi, by committing a rash act.
Still on bonnet
Wong's husband, identified in charge sheets as Goh Yong Sern, had previously discovered that his wife was going to hotels with Chia.
After Goh tried to seek marriage counselling and revealed to a social worker that he had "thoughts to harm (Chia)", the police were alerted, and an investigating officer (IO) engaged Chia, Wong and Goh in October 2023.
The deputy public prosecutor said the IO told Chia and Wong not to take matters into their own hands and seek police assistance in the event of any conflict or escalation with her husband.
Separately, Goh was similarly advised and assessed to be of low risk since he was actively seeking help and showed remorse for having such thoughts, ST reported.
The incident
Following this, on the evening of Jun. 28, 2024, Chia met Wong for dinner and at around 1am the next day, he drove her towards her home in Compassvale Bow in Sengkang.
Chia then drove to a nearby multi-storey carpark where they removed their clothes and became intimate with each other inside the vehicle.
Goh, who was looking for her, spotted the vehicle at around 2am and decided to approach it.
The DPP said: "After reaching the vehicle, the victim discovered both (Chia and Wong) in a state of complete undress. He tried to open the car doors as he wanted them to come out of the vehicle, but he was unable to open (them)."
Chia and Wong did not get out of the car to explain themselves, and Goh climbed on the bonnet to stop them from leaving.
He was then flung off as Chia began driving.
Goh, who called for an ambulance and was later found with injuries including a puncture wound on his face, as well as wounds to his chest, right hand and left knee, alerted the police after his surgery.
'More harm than necessary'
The DPP said: "By causing the victim to be flung off from the vehicle, the accused inflicted more harm than necessary for the purpose of any alleged self-defence.
"The victim could not and did not make any contact with the accused or (Wong) whilst they were secured in the vehicle."
Chia, who claimed he drove off in fear of Goh harming him, was arrested on Sep. 16, 2024.
ST reported that court documents did not disclose whether Wong and Goh are still married to each other, or if Wong has been charged or dealt with in court for being naked in the car.
Continued with affair
One of Chia's lawyers told the court that his client was somebody of good character who had since lost his job following media reports about this case.
A judge previously pointed out that Chia continued with the affair despite knowing Goh was aware of it, even going as far as to engage in intimate acts with his lover near Goh's residence.
The judge also said she could not accept that driving off with Goh still on the bonnet without attempting to try anything else first was a reasonable response on Chia's part, as he could have called or honked for help.
