A Chimi’s Mexican food outlet at 313@Somerset was vandalised in the early hours of Apr. 27, with two youths now assisting with police investigations.

Police said they received a call for assistance at 313 Orchard Road at about 4:30am on Apr. 27.

A 17-year-old male teenager and a 22-year-old man are assisting with investigations for mischief, the police added. No injuries were reported and investigations are ongoing.

“Individuals took and damaged our chairs, and forced entry”

In a statement, Chimi’s said its premises were damaged during the incident.

“On 27 April, our Chimi’s outlet at 313 Somerset was affected by an act of vandalism,” the restaurant said.

“Based on preliminary findings, individuals took and damaged our chairs, and forced entry into the unit, causing damage to our blinds. Further investigations are ongoing.”

The restaurant added that it is currently addressing the matter directly with the parents of those involved.

“We believe in giving people the opportunity to learn from their mistakes, and we are addressing the matter directly with the parents of the individuals involved to work towards an appropriate resolution.”

Operations at the outlet remain unaffected.

“Our outlet remains open and operations continue as normal.”

Chimi’s also thanked building management and security staff for responding quickly to the situation.

CCTV footage showed group outside closed outlet

Earlier CCTV footage shared by the restaurant on Instagram showed silhouettes of about three people outside the premises while it was shuttered.

In the video, one person was seen bending a section of the restaurant’s blinds before entering the premises and sitting inside.

Shortly after, clattering noises were heard, with an object appearing to be thrown onto the ground outside the eatery.

At another point in the footage, a chair was seen being swung at a construction barrier nearby.

Towards the end of the clip, a separate voice could be heard confronting the group and warning that the police would be called.

Restaurant said incident was upsetting for team

In its earlier social media post, the restaurant described the damage as difficult for staff to watch.

“So it was hard to watch a group walk in while we were closed and, for no reason, start smashing a chair, breaking our blinds, and forcing their way into our space while others stood by and cheered,” it wrote.

The outlet added that it has operated at the location for four years and will proceed with repairs.

“We will replace the chair. We will repair the blinds… and we will open as usual for service.”
