The logo of a mini mart in Geylang has made passers-by do a double take owing to its uncanny resemblance to the Sheng Siong supermarket logo.
Hui Sheng Supermarket is located at Lorong 22 Geylang.
Its predominantly blue-and-white logo, with a streak of green, appeared similar to Sheng Siong's logo.
Both logos utilised Chinese words with a stroke each emphasising a green tick.
For Hui Sheng Supermarket, it used the word "辉" (hui) for the logo, while for Sheng Siong it was the word "昇" (sheng).
The similarities were noted by at least one member of the public.
Hui Sheng Supermarket owner's response
In response to queries from Shin Min Daily News, the owner of Hui Sheng Supermarket said he designed the logo after his own name.
The man, who is in his 40s, said his surname is "Li" and his name is "Huisheng".
He said: "I designed the logo myself, so there is no infringement issue. It's a completely different concept."
He added that customers did not ask about the similarities.
His store, which opens from noon to night, has been open for business for about two months.
He also pointed out that the shop sign was conceived by him, and was not designed based on other brands.
He hired a manufacturer for producing the sign.
Li added: "It starts with my own name, I choose one character and enlarged it, I just use whatever comes to mind."
However, he said he has seen the online discussions about the similarities between his logo and Sheng Siong's logo, but would not respond or pay any special attention to them.
He also revealed that he does not rule out expanding operations in the future and is currently in contact with suppliers.
Sheng Siong clarifies: No business affiliation
Sheng Siong also clarified with Shin Min that there is no business relationship between the two parties.
A spokesperson said the supermarket chain is aware of Hui Sheng Supermarket's existence.
The nearest Sheng Siong supermarket outlet in the vicinity at Lorong 15 Geylang is about 400m away from Hui Sheng Supermarket.
