New Ubin Group co-founder, 70, gets 10 months & 2 weeks' jail for running red light & fatally hitting cyclist in 2022
He told the traffic police he believed he could have spotted the red light and the cyclist had he worn his glasses.
The 70-year-old co-founder of New Ubin Group was sentenced to 10 months and two weeks in jail on Apr. 17.
Pang Seng Meng ran a red light with his car, which hit and killed a cyclist in 2022.
He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining all classes of driving licences for eight years once he is out of prison.
He pleaded guilty in November 2025 to causing the death of Myanmar national Chit Oo Maung by driving without due care and attention.
What happened
The accident happened at the cross junction between Bukit Batok East Avenue 2 and Avenue 5 at 9:15am on Mar. 2, 2022.
Pang did not stop at the red light and his car hit the cyclist Chit Oo Maung, 41, who was riding across the road.
The cyclist was flung off his bicycle.
He was conveyed unconscious to National University Hospital with skull fractures and bleeding in his brain.
He died later that day at 5pm.
The court heard in November 2025 that Pang told the traffic police on the day of the accident that he believed he could have spotted the red light and the cyclist had he worn his glasses.
He was suffering from glaucoma, myopia and astigmatism, but was not wearing his glasses.
Pang’s bail has been set at S$15,000, according to The Straits Times.
He is expected to begin serving his sentence on Jun. 10.
