S'porean co-founder of New Ubin Seafood, 69, pleads guilty to beating red light & fatal collision with cyclist
The Myanmar national died after suffering seizures and multiple skull fractures.
Singaporean co-founder of the New Ubin Seafood group, Pang Seng Meng, pleaded guilty on Nov. 20 after he ran a red light and knocked down a cyclist in Bukit Batok.
According to CNA, the 41-year-old Myanmar national, Chit Oo Maung, sustained multiple skull fractures and later died from his injuries.
The incident occurred at around 9:15am on Mar. 2, 2022 along Bukit Batok East Avenue 2.
Entered signalised junction after traffic light turned red
The court heard that Pang had entered the signalised junction between Bukit Batok East Avenue 2 and Bukit Batok East Avenue 5 despite the traffic light turning red.
His vehicle struck Maung, who was cycling across the pedestrian crossing.
The impact threw the cyclist onto the road, cracked Pang's windscreen, dented the bonnet and left scratches on the front of the car.
Following the collision, Maung had seizures and suffered multiple skull fractures.
He died later that evening.
Pang had eye conditions, did not wear glasses that day
Pang was known to have several eye conditions including glaucoma, myopia and astigmatism at the time.
While he was aware of his conditions, he said he did not wear glasses when the incident occurred.
In a police statement, Pang also said that he could not recall seeing the red light, adding that he believed the collision could have been avoided if he had worn his glasses.
Prior to the incident, Pang had a history of traffic offences, including speeding and failing to comply with a red light.
Pang was charged with one count of driving his vehicle without due care and attention, causing Maung's death.
If found guilty, he may be jailed for up to three years', fined up to S$10,000, or both.
He may also be disqualified from driving.
Pang's sentencing has been adjourned to January 2026, after his lawyers requested the adjournment to obtain medical reports for their sentencing submissions.
