Trump says US doesn’t need Britain’s help to win war with Iran
The criticism follows London’s earlier decision to block the U.S. from using British bases for initial strikes on Iran.
United States president Donald Trump said the U.S does not need Britain’s help to win its war with Iran, in the latest spat between the long-time allies.
In a post on Truth Social on Mar. 7, Trump said the UK was “finally giving serious thought” to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East.
But he added that the U.S. could win the war without British support.
"We don’t need people that join wars after we’ve already won," Trump wrote, adding that he would "remember" Britain’s lack of support earlier in the conflict.
Trump has repeatedly criticised British prime minister Keir Starmer, accusing him of damaging the historically close relationship between the two countries.
The criticism follows London’s earlier decision to block the U.S. from using British bases for initial strikes on Iran.
Britain’s Ministry of Defence said it is preparing the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales (R09) for possible deployment to the Middle East, although no final decision has been made.
Starmer has defended his stance, saying he wanted to ensure any military action was legal and properly planned before granting permission.
He later permitted U.S. forces to use British bases for what he described as defensive strikes against Iranian missile launchers and storage sites.
Earlier this year, Starmer slammed Trump’s proposal to buy Greenland and called his suggestion that European troops stayed off the front lines in the Afghanistan war "frankly appalling."
