'Am I running a charity?': HK bride draws flak for complaining about HK$800 (S$131) banquet red packet
The banquet cost per head was HK$1,500 (S$245), the bride explained.
A newlywed Hong Kong bride apparently took to social media recently to bemoan the amount she got in a red packet from one of her wedding guests.
She reportedly opined, "Am I very close to you? Am I running a charity and buying you a meal?".
She was criticised by commenters.
Red packet amount far less than cost per head
Sin Chew Daily, citing HK01, said the bride explained that the cost of her hotel wedding was HK$1,500 per head (S$245).
However, one of her colleagues who attended the wedding only gave a HK$800 (S$131) red packet, which meant a shortfall of about HK$700 (S$114) that the bride would have to make up for.
She then complained that the colleague should not have attended the wedding if she could not afford it.
She apparently also opined that there should be a "minimum spend" set for wedding guests in the future.
Commenters turn tables on bride
Her take invited criticism from social media commenters, who turned the tables on the bride.
Instead of blaming the guest, commenters said the bride should not have held a wedding banquet if she could not afford it, Sin Chew Daily wrote.
Others retorted that the bride should not have guests she was not close to and took issue with the intention of her wedding invite.
There were also commenters who suggested that wedding banquets are unnecessary, and the occasion should just be accompanied by a simple gathering with loved ones.
