S'porean man, 62, dies after being run over by truck in Batam, driver allegedly on the run

A 62-year-old Singaporean man recently died after he was hit by a truck that dragged him under the vehicle and ran over him in Batam, Indonesia.

The accident occurred in front of a shopping mall at around 6pm (Batam time) on Mar. 4, 2026, Shin Min Daily News reported, adding that he was reportedly a passenger on a ride-hailing motorcycle at that time.

3 others injured

According to local media reports from Batam, the collision saw three others sustaining injuries after a truck suddenly lost control before veering off course and colliding with three motorcycles in front of it.

The deceased man, Cai (transliterated), died instantly at the scene after getting dragged under the vehicle with the motorcycle, Shin Min reported.

Images show a green dump truck on the road with its front bumper detached and a motorcycle wedged under its front wheel.

A separate image shows motorcycles involved in the accident, with onlookers at the scene.

Following the accident, the truck driver allegedly fled the scene, Shin Min reported, adding that local police were still searching for him.

Shipping company

Before his death, Cai worked for a shipping company in Batam, according to Shin Min, who later contacted the deceased's family in Singapore.

His family confirmed the accident but declined to comment further, Shin Min reported.

Upon hearing of his death, Cai's colleagues, who were shocked to hear of his passing, took a ferry so they could pay their respects at the funeral hall.

They said that Cai, who had previously worked in Batam for over 10 years, was a friendly person with good leadership abilities.
