Commuters were disembarked from an MRT train at Admiralty station after a power bank caught on fire at around 3pm on Mar. 16.

The emergency communication button (ECB) was activated, alerting the station staff to the incident, President of SMRT Trains Lam Sheau Kai said in response to Mothership's queries.

The fire was put out quickly by a woman, who appeared to be the owner of the power bank.

She was given first aid afterwards, then conveyed to Woodlands Hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

For the commuters' safety, everyone was asked to disembark and board the next train.

The affected train was subsequently moved to the depot for further checks, Lam said.

Stomped on the power bank

According to Mothership reader Cleb, the train doors had already closed at Admiralty station when the power bank suddenly caught on fire.

After someone pressed the emergency button, the doors opened again.

Cleb heard some people screaming and running before he noticed the power bank on the floor.

From a video he shared with Mothership, rather strong flames and smoke were emitting from a device on the floor.

A woman can be seen stamping on it repeatedly to put out the fire, while a few other commuters watched on.

After she stepped on it forcefully many times, the fire finally went out, leaving a burnt power bank.

Lam reminded commuters to ensure their power banks have proper safety protection features and are in good condition, to reduce the risk of such incidents.
