A quiet nursing home in Penang, Malaysia, witnessed a heartwarming union on Mar. 17, when 67-year-old Wu Caixing and 91-year-old Hu Ruirong (transliteration) married in a simple yet solemn ceremony before relatives, friends, and fellow residents.

The two had known each other for just three months, but neither had any doubts about their feelings.

"I wanted to get married and live with him"

In an interview with local news media China Press on Tuesday, Hu said that Wu had not proposed to her.

"But I wanted to get married and live with him, so we got married," she said.

When asked if she was nervous, the 91-year-old was composed.

She was already so old, she said, there was nothing to be afraid of, though she was quick to add that she was very happy.

Hu had never been married before.

In her younger years, she devoted herself to caring for her ageing parents, leaving little room for a life of her own.

She moved into Silver Jubilee Home For The Aged six or seven years ago as her health began to decline.

For years, she shared meals and daily routines with the home's other residents, but the right person never came along.

That changed in December 2025, when Wu moved in.

Dates included evening walks outside the home

According to Kathleen Maniam, the Head of Admission & CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) at the home, Hu and Wu were initially seated at adjacent tables in the dining hall.

Conversation came naturally, and before long, they were taking evening walks together, hand in hand.

"Our sweet moments on dates consist of holding hands and walking together outside the nursing home or shopping," Hu said.

Kathleen also noted that it was Hu who made the first move.

Before proceeding with the wedding, the home had conducted separate interviews with both parties.

Wu, who has limited mobility, told staff he cared for Hu and wanted to be with her permanently.

The home did more than support the relationship — it organised the entire wedding.

Best man and bridesmaid were also a couple

A management committee member who initiated the event said the home wanted to honour the couple's wishes and give them a proper celebration.

The wedding was fully sponsored by charitable businesses, community organisations, and individual donors, with volunteers helping bring it together.

The occasion carried an extra touch of warmth: the couple's best man and bridesmaid — both in their 70s — were also a couple themselves.

Li Mingshi and Zhu Ailian (transliteration) also met at Jubilee Home and have been together for more than two years, though Zhu has no interest in formalising the relationship.

Being together and loving each other was enough, Zhu had said.

Kathleen said she had deliberately chosen the pair for the roles. "It made it even more meaningful."

Wu and Hu now share a double room at the home, as do Li and Zhu.
