PM Wong congratulates Japan's PM Takaichi on re-election
Her party made a historic win in a Feb. 8 snap election.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong congratulated Japanese prime minister Sanae Takaichi on her re-election, a day after her party's Feb. 8 landslide victory in a snap election.
In a Facebook post, PM Wong said that Takaichi's renewed mandate "reflects the strong confidence the Japanese people place in her leadership."
"Singapore and Japan share a longstanding, substantive, and multifaceted relationship, and this year we mark 60 years of diplomatic ties.
I look forward to working with PM Takaichi to further strengthen our cooperation."
Re-election
Takaichi was re-elected to the post following a Lower House snap election on Feb. 8, a gamble which paid off with her party, the Liberal Democratic Party, securing two-thirds supermajority of the votes.
Results from early Feb. 9 showed that the party, which had 198 seats before the election, won 316 seats.
The historic win gave the LDP a higher proportion of representatives in the Lower House than any other party in postwar Japan, reported The Japan Times.
