Nigerian man, 37, stalked girl, 14, from bus interchange to Nex mall, later made 12 police reports that she harassed him
He was sentenced to six months in jail.
A Nigerian man working as a materials engineer in Singapore repeatedly stalked a 14-year-old girl in the Serangoon area and pressured her to give him her phone number, despite her repeated rejections.
Fearing for her safety, the girl eventually gave him her father’s phone number.
He called the number and her father warned him to stop harassing his daughter.
Despite this, the man continued to follow the girl at Nex shopping mall on two subsequent occasions.
The 37-year-old man faced four charges under the Protection from Harassment Act, Shin Min Daily News reported.
He pleaded guilty to one charge, while the remaining charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
He was eventually sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
A gag order is in place to protect the identity of the victim.
Harassed 14-year-old
The victim had gone for a class at Nex shopping mall on the evening of Sept. 20, 2024.
The man allegedly made eye contact with the girl at the Serangoon bus interchange before following her.
Realising she was being stalked, the girl ran towards a crowded area of the mall.
However, the man caught up with her and intercepted her.
He then complimented her, saying she was tall and pretty, and told her he wanted to be friends with her.
The frightened girl told him that she was a minor and even showed him her student identification card in the hopes that he would leave her alone.
But the man persisted and insisted on getting her contact information, refusing to leave otherwise.
Feeling helpless, the girl eventually gave him her father’s phone number.
Stalked her two more times
The girl’s father received a call from the man the following day and told him that his daughter was a minor, asking him to stop harassing her.
Nevertheless, on Jan. 27, 2025, the man saw the girl again as she alighted at a bus stop near Serangoon MRT station and followed her to the bus interchange.
He only stopped after noticing that she had approached a bus interchange employee for help.
About three weeks later, on Feb. 14, 2025, he encountered her again while she was shopping at Nex mall.
He approached her and began speaking to her, prompting the girl to seek help at the customer service counter.
Claimed girl was harassing him
The girl and her mother filed police reports on Jan. 28 and Feb. 14, respectively, and the man was questioned by police on Feb. 24.
On Apr. 18, he filed 12 police reports in a single day, claiming that he was being harassed by the girl and her father.
He alleged that the girl had approached him first and initially told him she was 24 years old before later admitting that she was 14.
He further claimed that the girl stalked him, mocked his appearance, and deliberately pretended to be afraid by seeking help from mall staff to humiliate him in public.
He also alleged that the girl’s father harassed him, causing him mental trauma, as well as show symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Three other victims
In addition to the teenage girl, three charges involving three other victims were taken into consideration during sentencing.
Between Nov. 21 and Dec. 21, 2024, the man harassed a 30-year-old woman on three occasions at a gym, including by complimenting her appearance and asking if she wanted to work out with him.
He also harassed a 25-year-old woman on four occasions between August 2024 and February 2025, speaking to her in lifts and even recording a video of her, according to charge sheets.
In another incident on Feb. 22, 2025, the man followed a 28-year-old woman at Nex shopping mall from a clothing store to a FairPrice outlet and forced her to engage in conversation with him.
