A man in China blew himself up after trying to set off a firework.

The entire sequence showing him lighting the firework on the road, having it blow up in his face, which then left his charred remains smouldering on the ground, were caught on camera.

The man was reportedly killed instantly, according to China Press.

What happened

Beijing Youth Daily originally reported that the incident took place in Hefei, the capital of Anhui province.

The incident was publicised on Feb. 10, but is likely not new as some online commenters have reportedly seen the video before.

The man in a black jacket had allegedly been drinking at the time.

He carried a large firework to the road to set it off.

Before lighting the fuse, he gestured to a person nearby for a lighter.

Lit the wrong fuse

According to accounts of what happened that were shared in China, the firework had two fuses: A time-delayed fuse, as well as a fast-firing instant fuse that can be remotely-controlled.

It was believed that the man lit the fast-firing instant fuse, which was the wrong fuse, and it resulted in an instant explosion.

When the firework exploded suddenly, it shot out thick red and white flares with smoke.

The man was seen lying motionless on the ground in the next instance, and his remains were on fire.

Terrified friends and relatives reportedly tried to extinguish the flames.

The man's death by firework became a trending topic on Weibo, with many saying that the ban on fireworks should be mandatory.

China had previously issued a ban on fireworks, but many regions have only imposed restrictions on public firework displays during festive seasons.
