S'pore DJ Joey Tay, 30, says toxic ex gaslit her into taking mood stabilisers
Tay's ex-boyfriend told her that she was throwing tantrums and that she needed to eat lithium, a type of mood stabiliser.
Yes 933 DJ Joey Tay recently opened up in a podcast and said that her toxic ex gaslit her into taking mood stabilisers to "regulate" herself.
The 30-year-old DJ, who got married last year, spoke about an ex-boyfriend and her relationship "horror story" on Mediacorp podcast Mood Drawer.
She said that her ex-boyfriend had cheated on her and gaslighted her into believing she needed to see a psychiatrist, reported 8 Days.
"Our relationship wasn't the healthiest; it was a vicious cycle."
Tay said that their relationship was not the healthiest, and it was a vicious cycle, sharing that she had no intentions to smear her ex-boyfriend, but was just sharing her experience.
Tay stated that she was "in too deep" at the time and started believing that she was the problem and had to change herself.
The couple house-hunted together, but after viewing the house, Tay's ex-boyfriend told her they were not financially ready to purchase a home, but had purportedly told the property agent, who was a friend, that he thought there was a problem with Tay.
She asked him, "If you had so many issues with me, why didn't you tell me?" and Tay said he replied with "Oh, I think our relationship is perfect. It's just that you're not perfect".
"I think you need to go and eat lithium"
Tay's ex-boyfriend told her that she was throwing tantrums and that she needed to eat lithium, a type of mood stabiliser.
When Tay saw the psychiatrist and spoke about her issues, the psychiatrist explained the concept of gaslighting to her.
Their relationship only ended after the couple took a break, and her boyfriend asked her to prepare "a list of all the things you've had done wrong, how you'd improve and how you'd salvage".
Tay wondered why she would "demean" herself to answer to his demands and eventually realised that the relationship could no longer continue.
