Workers' Party to form disciplinary panel to determine if Pritam Singh contravened party constitution
A Special Cadre Members’ Conference will be convened after the panel concludes its work.
The Workers’ Party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) has directed a disciplinary panel to be formed to determine if its Secretary-General and Leader of the Opposition, Pritam Singh, has “contravened the constitution of the party”.
Disciplinary panel and Special CMC
In a media statement issued via social media on Jan. 3, the WP confirmed that its CEC had met on Jan. 2.
During the meeting, the CEC deliberated on matters arising from the Singaporean High Court’s Dec. 4 judgement upholding Singh’s conviction for lying to the Committee of Privileges (COP).
This was followed by a request for a Special Cadre Members’ Conference (Special CMC).
The WP CEC directed that a disciplinary panel be formed to determine if Singh has “contravened the constitution of the party”.
It concluded that it was appropriate to call for the Special CMC after the disciplinary panel completes its work, “considering the need for due process”.
The CEC, in order to “prevent undue delay”, has set a timeline that the disciplinary process be concluded within three months.
Within two weeks of the process’s conclusion, the Notice of a Special CMC will be issued.
Letter issued
The Jan. 2 meeting of the WP CEC occurred after a letter signed by over 20 WP cadres calling for a special conference to be held in February was issued to the WP’s CEC.
The WP constitution also stipulates that only cadre members shall be entitled to be present at cadre members' conferences and vote.
A special conference is separate from an ordinary conference, which is held at least once every two years.
