PM Wong, Trump speak on phone, US invites S'pore to G20 Summit in Florida
Singapore was also invited to attend the Miami G20 Summit later in the year.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong spoke with United States President Donald Trump via telephone on Jan. 2, reaffirming the strength of the relationship between the two countries.
60th anniversary
2026 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Singapore and the U.S., something both leaders noted.
They also reaffirmed the enduring strength of the mutually beneficial partnership that spanned several domains and looked forward to deepening cooperation in both new and established areas.
According to PM Wong’s social media post, he also thanked Trump for his leadership in “advancing peace efforts globally, including in helping to secure the recent ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia.
Summit invite
In addition, during the call, Trump invited Singapore to attend the 2026 G20 summit, due to be held in Miami, Florida, later in the year.
The G20 summit is a multilateral gathering of several of the world’s largest economies.
Singapore is not a member of the grouping, but has regularly attended its meetings, usually at the invitation of the host nation.
PM Wong said in response to the invitation that Singapore would “play a constructive role and contribute to our shared agenda for growth and stability.”
PM Wong also said he is looking forward to his visit to the U.S. later in 2026, which would mark the important milestone in bilateral ties.
He added that he looked forward to deepening cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and civilian nuclear power.
