Drunk S'pore man, 40, tells police his wife crashed the car, his wife was home at the time
His wife had been home at the time of the accident, and was called down by Ang to take the blame for him.
A 40-year-old Singaporean man who was drunk and driving without a licence collided with a lorry in a carpark. He subsequently made his wife take the blame for the accident.
The man, Ang Kok Cheng Don, also known as Hong Guozhen, faced six charges in court.
He pleaded guilty on Jan. 16 to four charges: two counts of violating the Road Traffic Act, one count of violating the Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act, and one count of obstruction of justice, Shin Min Daily News reported.
He was later sentenced to 13 weeks and two days' jail, fined S$8,000, and disqualified from obtaining or holding a driver's licence for six years.
Called his wife down to take the blame for him
Citing court documents, Shin Min reported that the incident occurred at 9:07 pm on May 3, 2022, in the carpark of Block 122 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.
Ang had been driving his father's car at the time and was moving out of a parking lot when he bumped into a lorry, resulting in a side swipe collision, as stated in charge sheets seen by Mothership.
Later, when the police arrived, Ang lied and told them his wife was the driver and that he had been seated in the back of the car.
He claimed that his wife was an inexperienced driver and had panicked after the collision, hence they decided to switch seats.
This, he said, was why he emerged from the driver’s seat, rather than the passenger’s seat, when he went to speak to the lorry driver.
Ang’s wife later told the police that after switching seats, she went home and only returned to the scene after Ang called her.
However, investigations later revealed Ang's wife had in fact been home at the time of the accident, and was called down by Ang to take the blame for him.
Police officers detected alcohol on Ang’s breath and administered a breathalyser test, which showed a reading of 57 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – above the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
It was also found that Ang did not possess a valid driving licence at the time.
Two days later, he admitted that he had driven to several places earlier that day, including a friend’s house, a coffee shop and a convenience store, before he eventually stopped at the carpark.
He then proceeded to drink alcohol in the car with a friend.
Later, when Ang was about to drive off and pick up his friend, who had gone to the restroom, he hit the lorry.
Despite this confession, Ang lied yet again, claiming that he did not ask his wife to take the blame and that she had done so on her own.
Not his first offence
Ang also has a prior offence involving disorderly behaviour.
According to Shin Min, on Sep. 9, 2025, a 38-year-old man was walking home with his wife and daughter at Block 312 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 when he saw Ang walking towards him.
Ang appeared unsteady, spoke incoherently, and shouted profanities at him.
He also repeatedly tried to grab the man's arm, despite being pushed away.
When the man told Ang that he did not know him and that Ang was drunk, Ang said he was aware of both facts, but continued to harass him and asked him to follow him to a nearby table.
While the two were talking, Ang suddenly pushed and scratched the left arm of the victim, causing him to suffer scratches on his left arm, according to charge sheets.
The man subsequently sought help from nearby police officers who were on patrol.
