On Jan. 11, an 85-year-old woman in Malaysia was on her way to a market when she was knocked down and run over by a car while crossing the road.

She ultimately succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

Driver fled the scene

The incident came to public attention when the woman's grandson took to Facebook to share details of the accident.

According to him, his grandmother, identified as Lim Mui Choo, was making her way to the market located near UTC Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, between 8am and 9am that Sunday.

Lim was standing at a junction and was about to cross the road when a red Honda vehicle suddenly struck her from the side, causing her to fall to the ground.

However, the driver did not stop and instead continued moving forward, running her over.

Lim sustained multiple fractures and was bleeding heavily. She was also coughing up blood.

"She was lying on the ground waiting to be saved, while you (the driver) were thinking about how to run away," Lim's grandson wrote in his post.

He added that the driver initially attempted to flee the scene but was blocked by a car in front.

The driver then got out of his car, walked over to Lim and took a brief look at her before returning to his car and driving off.

No police report was made, nor was any ambulance called, Lim's grandson said.

Lim was later taken to the hospital, but had succumbed to her injuries.

According to Malaysian news outlet Malay Mail, police confirmed that Lim had died from severe head injuries while receiving treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

"Initial investigations found that when the driver of a Honda Odyssey was exiting a row of shops and turning right, a pedestrian crossed in front of the vehicle and the driver was unable to avoid hitting the victim," he said in a statement.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Lim was a cancer survivor

In an interview with Sin Chew Daily, Lim's daughter revealed that her mother was a cancer survivor who had made a full recovery a decade ago and had been in good health since.

She added that Lim had also been making plans for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations before the incident.

She said the family is still in shock over the incident, as they thought that Lim would have been able to enjoy her later years after overcoming cancer.

"Instead, her life was taken away by an irresponsible driver," Lim's daughter said.

She later claimed that police informed the family that the driver said he did not stop because he was rushing to take his child to school.

"We cannot accept this argument," she said. "Is sending a child to school more important than saving a life?"
