A Malaysian man, who is a Singapore permanent resident, was fined RM9,000 (S$2,850) on Jan. 14 in Malaysia for obstructing the licence plate of his Singapore-registered vehicle in Johor.

Long Sa Kow, 63, was caught on video pumping subsidised RON95 fuel.

He was charged under Malaysia's Road Transport Act 1987 for allegedly exhibiting an altered or tampered vehicle registration number.

He pleaded guilty at the Kulai Magistrate Court, China Press reported.

He could have been fined between RM5,000 (S$1,583) and RM20,000 (S$6,333), or jailed between one and five years, or both.

A video of the incident on Jan. 2 at about 10:36 pm showed that the first and last letters of his car’s number plate were taped up.

It was made to look like a Malaysia-registered vehicle.

The clip was circulated online on Jan. 3.

Long turned himself in to Malaysian police on Jan. 6.

He has to serve nine months' jail if he fails to pay the fine.
